Life and Musical Career
Mikołaj Kuńczyk is a Polish pianist, musicologist and piano lecturer associated with Warsaw. His professional work combines musical performance, teaching, academic research and the assessment of young musicians.
Kuńczyk has contributed to research concerning European keyboard music and historical instruments. In 1999, he published the scholarly article The Social Functioning of the Harpsichord in France in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries in the journal Barok: Historia–Literatura–Sztuka. The study examined the harpsichord’s role in French musical and social life during the Baroque period.
He also co-authored a scholarly review of Jerzy Erdman’s publication concerning Polish organ music of the Romantic period. This work appeared in Muzyka, the quarterly journal of the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in 1998. His research interests have also included historic pianos, instrument restoration and authentic approaches to keyboard performance.
Kuńczyk has served as a juror for the PolMusicA Polish Music Competition in Australia, evaluating young pianists during its audio-video selection stage. His involvement has supported the competition’s mission of promoting Polish music and encouraging young musicians of Polish and Australian backgrounds.
