Life and Musical Career
Henryk Melcer-Szczawiński was a Polish composer, pianist, conductor and music teacher. An important representative of Polish late Romanticism, he was highly regarded during his lifetime as both a virtuoso performer and an influential organiser of musical life.
Melcer grew up in Kalisz in a family with strong musical traditions. He received his first piano lessons from his grandmother, Józefa Klemczyńska-Melcerowa, and continued studying with his father, Karol Melcer, a violinist and choir director. In 1888, he entered the Warsaw Institute of Music, where he studied piano with Rudolf Strobl and composition with Zygmunt Noskowski. He later refined his piano technique in Vienna under the renowned teacher Theodor Leschetizky.
Melcer achieved international recognition in 1895 at the Anton Rubinstein Competition in Berlin. He received the competition’s principal composition prize for several works, including his First Piano Concerto and Piano Trio, and won third prize as a pianist. In 1898, his Second Piano Concerto received first prize at the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Composition Competition in Leipzig.
He taught at conservatories in Helsinki, Lviv and Vienna and later became artistic director of the Warsaw Philharmonic and Warsaw Opera. In 1922, he was appointed director of the Warsaw Conservatory, where he introduced new curricula, established student ensembles and strengthened the institution’s concert activities. He also served as a juror at the inaugural International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in 1927.
Melcer’s music combines late-Romantic harmony and virtuoso piano writing with elements of Polish folk music. Three of his most important compositions are:
Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor (1894) – an expressive and technically demanding work recognised at the Anton Rubinstein Competition.
Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor (1897) – one of his greatest compositions, awarded first prize at the Paderewski Competition.
Piano Trio in G Minor, Op. 2 (c. 1894) – an important chamber work combining rich Romantic melodies with skilful writing for piano and strings.
