Life and Musical Career
Aleksander Michałowski was a Polish pianist, composer and teacher, remembered as one of the most influential interpreters of Fryderyk Chopin’s music during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He also played an important role in establishing the Polish school of piano performance.
Michałowski began learning piano from his mother at the age of six. From 1867 to 1869, he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory with Theodor Coccius and Ignaz Moscheles, while receiving composition lessons from Carl Reinecke. At his graduation concert, he performed Chopin’s Piano Concerto in E Minor with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. He later studied briefly with Carl Tausig in Berlin.
After settling in Warsaw, Michałowski developed a successful career as a pianist and teacher. His understanding of Chopin’s music was influenced by consultations with Karol Mikuli, one of Chopin’s former students. Michałowski became celebrated for his command of Chopin’s complete repertoire, refined tone, technical brilliance and expressive interpretations. He also performed chamber music and toured Poland, Germany, Austria and Russia.
In 1874, he began teaching at the Warsaw Institute of Music, becoming a professor of advanced piano studies in 1891. From 1919, he taught at the Fryderyk Chopin Music School of the Warsaw Music Society. His distinguished students included Wanda Landowska, Mischa Levitzki, Vladimir Sofronitsky, Władysław Szpilman and Jerzy Żurawlew, who later founded the International Chopin Piano Competition.
Michałowski composed 36 numbered works and several unnumbered pieces, almost all for solo piano. His music reflects the Romantic tradition and shows the strong influence of Chopin, particularly in its lyrical melodies, elegant ornamentation and use of Polish dance rhythms.

Ballade in B-flat Major, Op. 30 – an expansive Romantic piano work combining lyrical writing with dramatic contrasts.
Mazurka in C-sharp Minor, Op. 17 – a refined Polish dance miniature demonstrating Michałowski’s close connection to the Chopin tradition.
Berceuse No. 1, Op. 1 – an expressive early piano work characterised by a gentle rocking rhythm and intimate melodic style.
