Life and Musical Career
Antoni Cofalik is a Polish violinist, chamber musician, composer and influential music teacher. His work has been devoted primarily to the violin, both through performance and through the creation of educational compositions for young musicians.
Cofalik grew up in a musical household, although neither of his parents was a professional musician. He became fascinated by the sound of the violin as a child and began learning the instrument at the age of eleven. He later studied at the State Higher School of Music in Kraków, now the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music. He continued his education in Weimar, Siena, Salzburg and Lucerne, studying with distinguished teachers including Zenon Feliński, Mikhail Vaiman, Riccardo Brengola and Enrico Mainardi.
Cofalik began performing professionally while still a student. In 1962, he premiered Krzysztof Penderecki’s Miniatures for Violin and Piano with the composer at the piano. From 1963 to 1991, he was a member of the Kraków Trio with pianist Jerzy Łukowicz and cellist Krzysztof Okoń. The ensemble performed throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas and received first prize at the Antonio Vivaldi International Chamber Music Competition in Siena in 1964.
Alongside his performing career, Cofalik became a highly respected violin teacher. He taught in Kraków and at music academies in Bydgoszcz and Katowice and conducted masterclasses in Poland and abroad. He has written more than sixty publications, including violin methods, technical studies, arrangements and original educational compositions. His music is known for combining clear teaching objectives with imagination, humour and expressive musical character.
Three of his most important compositions are:
The Aviary (Ptaszarnia) – a cycle of three illustrative miniatures for violin and piano depicting sparrows, a nightingale and a cuckoo. The piano accompaniment was written by Janina Garścia.
Six Etudes-Caprices (6 Etiud-Kaprysów) – a collection for solo violin combining technical studies with engaging musical ideas and expressive performance.
Prelude and Fughetta (Preludium i fughetta) – a solo violin work that introduces young performers to contrasting musical forms and contrapuntal writing.
