Life and Musical Career
Marceli Feliks Popławski was a Polish composer, violinist, conductor and music teacher. He contributed significantly to Polish musical education and concert life during the first half of the twentieth century, although much of his music was lost during the two world wars.
From 1901 to 1907, Popławski studied in Kyiv, initially attending the Polytechnic Institute and the Faculty of Law before concentrating on music. He later continued his education at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he studied violin with Hans Sitt and composition with Max Reger. He completed his studies with distinction, receiving diplomas in both composition and violin performance. Popławski also studied composition with Vincent d’Indy in Paris and Alexander Glazunov in Saint Petersburg.
In 1912, he became a violin professor at the music school of the Imperial Russian Musical Society in Yaroslavl. During the First World War, he worked in Kyiv, where he helped establish the experimental Studyo Theatre and served as its composer and musical director.
Popławski returned to Poland in 1921 and became musical director of the National Theatre in Toruń. In 1923, he was appointed director of the Conservatory of the Pomeranian Music Society, artistic director of the society and professor of violin. His work helped strengthen professional musical education in the Pomeranian region. After leaving Toruń, he lived in Równe and Warsaw. Following the Second World War, he directed a music school in Pabianice.
Popławski’s compositions include orchestral works, string quartets, violin sonatas, concert pieces and educational miniatures. His style developed from late Romanticism towards a more modern harmonic language, featuring expressive melodies, chromaticism and virtuoso violin writing.
Three of his most important compositions are:
Violin Concerto in D Major (1909) – one of his principal large-scale works, reflecting his experience as a virtuoso violinist.
In the Sun (W słońcu, 1912) – a suite for violin and piano combining lyrical writing, dance elements and colourful instrumental expression.
Easy Pieces for Violin and Piano – a widely used educational collection containing the Polonaise, Mazur, Krakowiak, Spanish Dance and Tarantella.
